I get a regular email from Brian Wright of the Audience Development Group. This morning's email was something that I really needed to read - I hope you benefit from it:
Do you spend more time on the "needy" items in your day than you do with the really important ones? They are usually not one in the same. It's time to reprioritize. There are dozens of little fires to put out and people who demand a great deal of your time. Take a minute or two to explain the time you need to spend on a very important item and that you will be able to get with them at a later time and then give them that time. You will be able to get those really important projects done much more efficiently.
